The first thing you’re going to want to do is remove any program in the startup that you do not absolutely need to load every time your computer starts. Many programs will put themselves in their by default, and they do not need to load when you’re not using them.

To disable startup programs, click start, click run, type msconfig, select startup tab, disable any program that you do not want loading, apply. You would need to restart. Now check the time to boot. To get an instant speed boost from your XP operating system go to your start menu and right-click my computer, click properties. Click the ‘advanced’ tab. Then click the ‘settings’ button under the heading ‘performance’.

If your Windows XP is running extremely slow want to make sure you do not have a virus or spyware running in the background. So update your virus definitions and run a complete skan. Do the same for your spyware/ad aware program.

Most people overlook this step but you want to do a complete cleaning and repair of your registry. This is usually one of the biggest reasons Windows XP will run slow. Your Windows registry becomes bloated and corrupt over the years. Most people never do any maintenance on it. For a temporary fix you can open task manager by right clicking in your taskbar or hitting control alt delete. click the processes tab and from there you can click CPU at the top to sort by load. You can see which one is causing the high 100% CPU load. If it is something that is not critical to run your Windows operating system you can shut it down. When you reboot it will come back so don’t worry about causing any damage.

A virus or spyware can cause a 100% CPU usage load. Some viruses are pretty nasty and will hog all resources on your computer to multiply itself. Some spyware or ad aware programs will also do this but not as much as a virus. So update your virus definitions and run a full scan. it is going to very depending on which Windows operating system you are using but most of them can be started in safe mode by tapping the F8 key when your computer starts to boot. If you do not catch it early enough you may have to shut it down and try again.

Safe mode will use less resources and should allow you to run your virus scan if you cannot do in normal mode. No virus? What else could it next you should check for spyware or ad aware running in the background as this can use a lot of your CPU resources. Let’s not confuses short bursts of 100% CPU usage. This is fairly normal when you open programs or run software that requires high CPU usage like videos or games. However your CPU usage should not constantly run at 100% this is not normal.

You may have corrupt files or a really bloated registry that is causing your Windows operating system to constantly run high.
