Windows 7 Slow Shutdown – Try These Solutions
If you are having the Windows 7 slow shutdown problem like so many other people here are a few things you can do to cure your problem. If you are experiencing the “Windows is shutting down screen” for more than a few minutes in Windows 7 you have one or more programs that are not shutting down properly. You could manually shut down your computer by holding in the power button for 4 seconds, but this is not the proper way to shutdown Windows 7.

Use the manual shutdown only as a last resort visit may do further damage to your Windows seven operating system. To begin with I always recommend cleaning out your temporary Internet files and cookies. In case you do not know how to do this, click my computer, select your hard drive, right click and select properties. From there you can do a cleaning.
Run your antivirus update then perform a full scan. You want to make sure you have nothing running in the background that is refusing to shut down. Like a nasty virus or spyware. Another big problem found with Windows 7 slow shutdown is drivers being out of date. Make sure all your drivers are up to date with the current version, especially the video and audio drivers. These can sometimes cause Windows 7 to hang on shut down.
Another huge problem causing window 7 two have a slow shutdown is because of a corrupted registry. You need to scan and clean the registry to delete all corrupted or orphaned files, and believe me there will be plenty of them. My brand-new Windows 7 computer straight out of the box had a ton of registry errors. And that was before I loaded any software on it.
You may have tried to load older programs that were incompatible with Windows 7 especially Windows 7 64. Even though you may have uninstalled these programs they more than likely left behind a registry entry. When Windows 7 starts or shuts down it tries to reference these orphaned registry keys. It searches for the software that is no longer there and will pause on every single one of them trying to cross reference. These need to be deleted.
While you can do this manually is very difficult and even experienced computer technicians use software to do the job quickly. If you ever looked into the Windows registry you know there are thousands and thousands of files. It can take hours just to find one bad one that doesn’t belong in their any longer. I recommend using one of the programs listed on our Main page for registry repair/cleaning. You can download either one of them and run a scan to evaluate how many errors are on your computer. From there you can decide whether you need to purchase software or not. Software is a good investment and will keep your computer running smooth and fully optimized.
So you thought when you upgraded or bought a new Windows 7 computer you would no longer have problems like the Windows 7 slow shutdown. Unfortunately Windows still decides they need a registry to operate. All the Windows versions use it and experienced similar problems. Your only other option is to use a Mac or Linux operating system. However most programs are written to run on Windows so most of the time you have no choice. In my opinion however Windows 7 is their best operating system so far.
